VOICES: Stories of Survival

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a crisis within a crisis for survivors of domestic violence around the world. In 2020, as a result of the pandemic, we have seen a dramatic increase in violence and abuse in our community. Over the course of the pandemic, the number of calls to our center have increased more than 75% and the amount of time spent on each call more than doubled (138%) due to the complexity and severity/danger each caller is facing. The need for emergency shelter has increased by more than 150% compared to the same time period last year. The COVID-19 pandemic, resultant quarantine and the collateral economic effects have impacted the lives of our clients in a multitude of ways.
