Barbara came to CHANA after years of abuse by her husband. She hadn’t left earlier because her husband controlled the finances in every way, including paying for her daughter’s education. Without that support, she feared, her daughter would not be able to go to school. Barbara remained in her home. She would only consider leaving the dangerous situation when she learned that CHANA could help her learn about financial aid for her daughter. By reducing that barrier to leaving, CHANA helped Barbara and her daughter take steps toward safety.
CHANA worked with Barbara to create a safety plan and eventually leave her abusive husband. Today, Barbara lives in Chicago. She’s an advocate for other domestic violence victims and works in her faith community. Her daughter plans to become an occupational therapist.
